How Does Heygreen Support pupils with SEN?

Heygreen believes that the key to supporting disabled pupils and pupils with special educational needs is first quality teaching with additional interventions/modifications/amendments used to remove barriers to learning and to ensure that good progress is made.

To do this, all SEND pupils are tracked and monitored regularly in Reading, Writing & Maths and complete a Reading & Spelling age test once a term.

Following each assessment period, the attainment & progress of SEND pupils are discussed during pupil progress meetings with actions being taken where necessary to support learning further or to develop a further understanding of the child’s needs – for example: A request could be made for support or an assessment to take place from a specialist/outside agency or an intervention programme to be implemented.

At any point during the school year however, the school SENCO is available to discuss the attainment and progress of any pupil who has been identified or showing signs of having a disability or special educational need.

In total, there are four broad areas of need and support:

  1. Communication & Interaction (CI)- Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Speech Language and Communication Needs (SLCN)

  1. Cognition & Learning (COG/L)- Moderate Learning Difficulties (MLD), Specific Learning Difficulty (SpLD) such as: Dyslexic, Dyspraxic or Dyscalculic.

  1. Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SMEH) – Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)

  1. Sensory &/or Physical Needs – Hearing Impaired (HI), Visually Impaired VI, Physical Disability (PD)

Below is a list of some outside agencies that the school works closely with to ensure that the needs of any pupil with a disability or special education need is fully met:

  • SALT (Speech & Language Therapy)

  • CAMHS (Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services)
