The School Day
Heygreen Primary School runs a Breakfast Club for all pupils from Reception to Year 6.
- 7:45am – 8:30am
Our school hours are:
- 8:45am – 3:15pm
Children have a daily morning break for 15 minutes, and a lunch break lasting 45 minutes.
Overall, pupils from Reception to Year 6 are taught for 32.5 hours per week.
On entry to school, children take part in a daily ‘strong start’, which is a way of retrieving and practising key basic skills.
Lessons:
Maths lessons are taught every morning and Maths lessons focus on the five principles of the mastery approach:
Reading and writing lessons are taught every day, with an additional 15 minute spelling session (using the RWI Spelling programme) every afternoon. Pupils are also taught handwriting formation twice per week (using the Nelson Handwriting scheme).
In Reception and KS1, phonics and guided reading are taught through the Read Write Inc. (RWI) programme. At the same time of day, KS2 classes have ‘Reading Comprehension’ (WCR) in which a range of reading skills are developed through the reading of novels and linked texts. Children who still need decoding support in Years 3 and 4 are streamed into RWI groups. Pupils in Y5 and Y6, who need further decoding support, are provided with an intervention called ‘Fresh Start’. This is a branch of the RWI programme.
Pupils take part in PE lessons every week.
Every week, KS1 and KS2 pupils are taught the following lessons:
- Science
- History or Geography (alternate half terms)
- Art or DT (alternate half terms)
- Music
- MFL (Spanish)
- RE
- PSHCE
British values and spiritual, moral, social and cultural (SMSC) education are woven into the curriculum through the teaching and learning of core and non-core subjects, assemblies, enrichment activities and the wider curriculum.
